A worrying report has revealed that the percentage of Americans who are dealing with uncontrollable high blood pressure has increased significantly in recent years. There are shreds of evidence which corroborate that the nation is losing the fight against heart ailments. Experts have analyzed the data of 18000 patients with high blood pressure. They have found that there has been a 10 percent increase in people who are suffering from uncontrollable hypertension from 2017 to 2018. However, this proportion was quite less in 2013 and 2014. Hypertension is also known as the ‘silent killer’. The report says that people with hypertension are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with fatal COVID19 illness. This study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
A previous study has revealed that people with blood pressure issues are not being prescribed medications, as per the guidelines. People who have uncontrollable hypertension are given only a single dose drug rather than a treatment with a combination of medications. The lead author of the study, Dr. Paul Muntner has said that a combination of medications might be more effective in reducing blood pressure. Experts have observed how the authorities have been addressing the menace of hypertension in the US. They have examined the data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The NHANES has been gathering health data every two years for the last two decades. There are around more than 100 million people in the USA, who are dealing with high blood pressure, as per the American Heart Association.
The percentage of controlled blood pressure increased from 31.8 percent to 48.5 in 2007 and 2008. It remained stable for a couple of years as well. However, the proportion of controlled blood pressure drastically reduced to 43.7 percent in 2017 and 2018 across the US. Experts have analyzed the data of many patients during the study. They have found that only 19 percent of them have their blood pressure under control. Scientists have said that to control the condition of hypertension among people, the systolic measurement should be lower than 140 mmHg. At the same time, the diastolic measurement should be less than 90 mmHg. As per the experts, people should aim to bring down their blood pressure to 130/80 mmHg. Experts have claimed that people who have been in touch with their doctor regularly are five times more likely to have controlled blood pressure. While those who do not consult their healthcare provider regularly, are usually at high risk. Experts have said that there is an urgent requirement for additional care for patients with high blood pressure. Meanwhile, Health officials need to take quick action to bring the situation under control.
