Health authorities have reported that more than 40 people have been dealing with strange brain disease in the New Brunswick Province, Canada. Health experts have been trying to find out the cause behind the mysterious brain disorder. Experts have said that the mystery ailment includes symptoms of a rare and fatal brain disorder that is known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Memory loss, hallucination, and muscle atrophy are some of the common symptoms of unexplained disease.
Health officials in Canada have informed doctors in New Brunswick Province that they are tracking a cluster of 43 people who are dealing with a neurological illness of an unknown cause. The first case of this mysterious brain disorder has been found in 2015. However, since then, experts have seen a rise in the number of cases in recent years. Nearly 24 cases of the strange disease have been reported in 2020 and six cases have been found in 2021 so far. Around five people have lost their lives due to the disease, said the experts.
Earlier, experts have thought that these cases are linked to CJD that is caused by oddly folded proteins called prions. Nevertheless, clinical tests that have been conducted have shown no evidence of CJD or any other prions linked illness so far. Dr. Neil Cashman, who is a professor at the University of British Columbia, has said that the three autopsies that have been done so far show no hint of a human prion ailment. Dr. Cashman has been studying prion diseases and has been involved in the recent study as well. He has said that the mysterious disease has surprised everyone.
Dr. Neil Cashman has said that many research teams have been trying to find out the reason behind this strange brain disorder that might be a new disease or a blend of many different disorders that are known to us. As per the report, people who have been dealing with this mysterious ailment have suffered worse symptoms within 18 to 36 months. They have developed symptoms such as baffling pains and spasms, cognitive decline, muscle wasting, and teeth chattering over time. Experts have said that the majority of cases of this mysterious disease have been found in the Acadian Peninsula in northeast New Brunswick and across the city of Moncton in southeast New Brunswick.
Health experts have said that these cases are restricted to a specific region; it might be due to an environmental pollutant. They believe that B-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and domoic acid might be possible culprits behind the strange brain illness. At times, these toxins are found in fish and shellfish, said the experts. However, Dr. Cashman has said that finding the actual cause of the disease will take more time.
He has said that it is possible, that ongoing studies will come up with a cause within a week or it might take a year to find out the actual cause behind the disease. Health experts have said that they have seen that symptoms of the mysterious and fatal brain disease have progressed gradually over 18 to 36 months among the patients.
